If you checked out my post featuring the top 10 things I wouldn’t miss on Isla Mujeres, then you know dinner at Lolo Lorena’s is a must.

This was our second dining experience and once again she accommodated our dietary restrictions with panache.

It was difficult to photograph the beautiful plates of food that came out due to the fantastic ambience. I took a few shots with flash, but felt bad for my dining companions, so kept it to a minimum.

You dine in the courtyard of Lolo’s home. She has beautiful plants growing, twinkling lights, and local pendant lamps made from coconuts hanging over the table.

This is a communal meal, unless you set up a private dinner, so be prepared to interact with your fellow diners.

There are several courses and each one is presented like artwork. They are what many Americans would consider smaller portions, but I have never left hungry. It’s European-style. Lolo is Belgian and cooking is in her blood.

This is a unique, relaxing experience with food. The intimate setting and mellow vibe, mixed with gourmet food, is one-of-a-kind dining.

The photo above is of Lolo explaining the dishes she brings out. Dining at her place is a rare opportunity to experience the energy and creative flow of a chef in their element.

Lolo has been on the island for more than 20 years. She travels to Europe each year to visit family and brings back ingredients essential to her special dishes.

During our most recent dining experience, we were treated to a percussion and fire-dancing routine that was spectacular. I could feel the heat on my face; I’ve never seen anything like that up-close before.

After everyone left, we stayed to catch up a bit with Lolo and finish our drinks. The photo below is several (delicious) mojitos in (you can BYOB to the dinner or have $5 mojitos) and it’s not really in focus, but I like it. We were so relaxed and that’s what the island and this unique dining experience is all about.
